Pita was found walking very calmly around the house together with the
domestic pets. It's totally the opposite, the expected behavior was
shyness, fear or defense, so it is presumed that Pita had already been
with that family for several years.
When this type of rescue occurs, it is called an extraction, and in
addition to being completely unnecessary, it is also one of the main
problems that Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center (Zooave) presents
with the population.
Because of Pita entered to Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center
(Zooave), being so small, it is very difficult for a feline that
large and with such complex behavior to have the ability to develop all
the necessary skills to survive in nature.
Felines, specifically pumas, require maternal care for between a year
and a half to two years. Pita was only in contact with her mother for
about only two months.
During 2021, 24% of the animals that the Rescate Wildlife Rescue
Center (Zooave) received were unnecessary extractions, with
animals that could have remained in their habitat with their parents, it
would have guaranteed that they successfully reached adulthood and they
would not have had to enter a Rescue Center, it is important that the
population knows the importance of proper handling that wild animals
should have when we see any animal within its own habitat.
